Our last year in review: #StayHome & Code!

14 April, 2020

Although we’re all navigating uncertain times and the reality of the world is very different from what it was one year ago, Flowing Code is turning 3 years old and we wanted to take a moment to acknowledge all the good work and growth we managed to achieve. So here’s little review of our last year:

New Office space

This was one of our main goals, finding a new home that would allow our team to keep growing and that would make our coding days more comfortable, and in July we got the chance to achieve this goal.

Of course, given the current events, now we are 100% fully remote, but at least knowing that when everything ends, and normality returns, we have our place in the world waiting for us.

Job Fair

We attended at a local Job Fair organized by Universidad Nacional del Litoral. It was really interesting because we had the chance to talk with students that are deciding what to do after they finish their courses.
So this was a good opportunity for us to introduce our company, and explain what we do and how we work. A lot of work for our marketing team.

Internship Program

This year we started an internship program alongside UTN – Santa Fe, and in January a new member joined our team. We defined a training program that hopefully will be reused by new candidates in the future.
Therefore we’ve developed an interesting path full of things to learn, starting from a good leverage above Java basics, then some main concepts regarding enterprise application development, and some standard frameworks like Spring and Hibernate. Regarding the presentation layer, we focus on Vaadin.
Also regarding tools, the training emphasizes the usage of Maven (for development lifecycle) and Git (for code versioning). Our chosen IDE is the latest version of Eclipse.

Open Source

Our work on contributions that would make developers code more easy continued, creating new components and updating the existing ones. We’re thankful for the feedback we keep getting from the community, please don’t hesitate on creating issues, asking for enhancements and more on our project pages on GitHub.

Learning

We keep taking very seriously our commitment to deliver intelligence, trying to keep up to date with all changes in technologies, methodologies, frameworks, languages out there. Here’s a list of some of the topics we discussed in our learning days

Writing

Another way to give back to the community is by sharing our knowledge so we wrote some more interesting articles:

Delivering

A lot of work delivered to our customers during the last year, here are some highlights of what we did:

  • A full layered enterprise application kickstart for a customer from Paraguay. The project is still ongoing and is related to medical information management. The customer had a team that needed a good starting point for their project, with every framework already configured, and with a difficult use case already implemented that can serve as a starting point so every developer can have a guideline about what is the technical direction of the coding.
  • Important and big migration of the email sending engine utilized by two big Java Enterprise legacy applications for a customer in Argentina. The task involved changing completely the way that emails were automatically generated and assembled. Then the sending considered using a completely different protocol and the changes needed to be done flawlessly so they can continue delivering the emails in good conditions in production environments.
  • Investigated, designed and implemented a conversion of a web application into a desktop application that can be installed in a computer and executed completely offline for a US customer. This involved using several open source libraries and techniques. If you have a similar need contact us and we can assist you.
  • Delivering a consulting on demand service, for giving support to several big retail oriented productive applications to a customer in Colombia. This involved assembling a vertical team that can be helpful in finding and resolving complex production problems.
  • Conducting a big product implementation for health companies in US. We participate in a global team that is working actively in the customizations needed to be done in the main product and then the implementation of it in several different environments.
  • Supporting customers for technical and architectural direction in the development of many applications around the world. We are part of the team of experts of a big open source framework used by more than 150.000 developers globally.
